Background:
Chemotherapy uses strong medicines to kill cancer cells or stop them from growing. In this study, patients may receive several different chemotherapy drugs that work in different ways. Vincristine stops cancer cells from dividing and spreading. Dactinomycin blocks the instructions cancer cells need to grow. Doxorubicin damages the DNA inside cancer cells, which helps destroy them.
Radiotherapy uses high-energy x-rays to shrink or kill any remaining cancer cells.
The Trial:
This study is looking at the best way to treat children with Wilms’ tumor after surgery.
Based on the stage and features of their cancer, each child will be placed into a treatment group.
The treatment groups may include:
- Chemotherapy (using vincristine, dactinomycin, and doxorubicin)
- Radiation therapy
- Observation only (watching the patient closely after surgery without giving more treatment unless it becomes necessary)
The trial is not “blind”, so both you and your doctor will know which therapy you are receiving.
Basic Eligibility:
- Children and young adults up to 30 years old
- Stage I, II, or III Wilms’ tumor
- Already had surgery to remove the tumor
Additional eligibility criteria will apply. Please speak to your doctor.
