In the Meeting

In addition to speaking, however, it is equally important that you leave time for your provincial representative to talk. Effective advocacy is about presenting, listening and responding. If you hear yourself talking continuously – stop. If you don’t, you’re letting your elected representative get away with not having to address your key messages or one ‘ask’ because you will have run out of time. As well, don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek clarification, and be sure to establish clear follow-ups with timelines.

  • Be patient – your 3 key messages are likely 3 of many that decision-maker will hear that day.
  • Establish clear follow-ups, with timelines and assigned responsibilities.
