Wilms tumour is a rare type of kidney cancer that primarily affects children. For most patients, the first line of treatment is surgery to remove the affected kidney (nephrectomy). This may be accompanied by either radiation treatment, chemotherapy, or both, depending on the size and stage of the tumour.
At present, there are six different chemotherapy “regimens” that may be used in the treatment of Wilms tumour. These regimens consist of a series of chemotherapy drugs (2-6) that attack the tumour in a variety of different ways. The most appropriate regimen is selected by a medical oncologist based on an assessment of the pathology and stage of the tumor.
In this trial, the researchers will be studying two new regimens of chemotherapy for the treatment of Wilms tumour:
- Regimen UH-3: Vincristine, Doxorubicin, Cyclophosphamide, Carboplatin, Etoposide, and Irinotecan
- ICE/Cyclo/Topo: Ifosfamide, Carboplatin, Etoposide, Cyclophosphamide, and Topotecan
This study will be divided into two treatment groups that will be assigned by the physician handling your care:
Group 1 will received Regimen UH-3
Group 2 will receive the ICE/Cyclo/Topo regimen
The medications will be administered by IV (to a vein in the arm) in a specific order for each regimen.
There is no control group in the study, so there will be no “placebo”, and all patients will receive treatment.
- Newly diagnosed stage 2/3/4 diffuse anaplastic Wilms tumour, or;
- Favourable histology Wilms tumour that has returned after previously achieving remission
Additional eligibility criteria will apply. Please speak to your doctor.
