Background:
Kidney cancer is a common cancer in Canada. For many people, the usual treatment is surgery to remove the kidney (nephrectomy). However, some patients may not be able to have surgery due to other health conditions, or they may prefer a less invasive option.
This study is looking at a type of radiation treatment called stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) as an alternative for patients who cannot have surgery.
SBRT is a non-invasive treatment that delivers very precise, high-dose radiation directly to the tumour while limiting damage to the surrounding healthy tissue. Unlike some other treatments, SBRT can be used for kidney tumours of different sizes and locations.
The Trial:
This study is looking at a radiation treatment called stereotactic body radiation therapy for people with kidney cancer who cannot have surgery.
The goal of this study is to better understand:
- How well SBRT works to control kidney cancer
- The side effects of this treatment
- How treatment may affect a patient’s quality of life
All participants in this study will receive SBRT. There are no separate treatment groups, and everyone will receive the same type of treatment.
Basic Eligibility:
- Have been diagnosed with kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma)
- Have a tumour that is larger than 3 cm or has come back after previous local treatment
- Are not able to have surgery, or have chosen not to have surgery after discussing options with your care team
Additional eligibility criteria will apply. Please speak to your doctor.
