Premiere of Empower: Transforming the Cancer Journey, Documentary
We warmly invite you to join us for the premiere screening of Empower — a moving new documentary that captures the extraordinary impact of a simple yet revolutionary idea: that small, evidence-based daily actions can transform lives.
Created by Dr. Rob Rutledge, Radiation Oncologist, Associate Professor of Medicine together with Dr. Gabriela Ilie, Endowed Soillse Scientist in Cancer Quality of Life Research at Dalhousie University, the Prostate Cancer Patient Empowerment Program (PEP) began as a local initiative and has now become a global movement, changing the lives of individuals facing cancer and chronic illness across Canada and around the world (New Zealand, South Africa, Belgium and Romania).
Note: Kidney Cancer Canada is funding up to 50 free registrations for the kidney cancer community to join the ground breaking 6 month program to support your care path. Details at this link.
Produced by John Drew McQueen and Edward Boyce, Empower follows the courageous journeys of Melanie Smith and John Underhill — two individuals who, when confronted with cancer, found strength, hope, and healing through the simple daily practices championed by the program: moving the body, eating nourishing foods, breathing deeply, cultivating relaxation, sleeping well, living with purpose, showing kindness, and forging human connections.
Their stories — and the stories of many others — reveal a universal truth: even in our most difficult moments, resilience, compassion, and purpose can light the way forward. Empower is a celebration of the human spirit, a call to action, and a testament to the life-changing power of community, love, and small daily choices.
Following the documentary, there will be a panel discussion featuring inspiring cancer survivors and program participants.
Join us for this unforgettable evening as we celebrate the ripple effect of empowerment — from Nova Scotia to the world.
